Glacier National Park and the surrounding national forests are home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and diverse ecosystems in North America. While our guided hikes take place in the pristine national forests bordering the park, you’ll still experience incredible wildlife encounters and stunning alpine flora. Here’s what you can expect to see on your adventure with us!
Wildlife: Creatures of the Wilderness
The forests surrounding Glacier are teeming with wildlife, offering visitors a chance to witness nature at its finest.
1. Grizzly & Black Bears
Bears are an iconic presence in this region. While black bears are more commonly spotted, grizzlies also roam the forests. We always follow Leave No Trace principles and educate our guests on proper bear safety, including carrying bear spray and making noise while hiking.
2. Majestic Moose
Moose love the wetland areas and are often seen in the early mornings or late evenings. These gentle giants can weigh over 1,000 pounds and are best observed from a safe distance.
3. Mountain Goats & Bighorn Sheep
If you’re hiking in higher elevations, keep an eye out for mountain goats clinging to rocky cliffs or bighorn sheep grazing along ridges. These agile animals are a true testament to nature’s adaptability.
4. Birds of Prey
Golden eagles, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons soar through the skies, offering a stunning sight for birdwatching enthusiasts. Listen for their calls and watch for them gliding effortlessly above the treetops.
Flora: Nature’s Wild Beauty
The diverse plant life in the national forests near Glacier is just as spectacular as the wildlife. The changing seasons bring an array of vibrant colors and fragrant blooms.
1. Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax)
This tall, white, fluffy plant is a favorite sight among hikers. It blooms in cycles, with some years producing entire hillsides covered in delicate beargrass blossoms.
2. Huckleberries
A staple of the region, huckleberries grow in abundance along trails and are a favorite snack for both humans and bears. These small, sweet berries are ripe in late summer and are often used in local jams, pies, and even ice cream!
3. Indian Paintbrush
This fiery red wildflower stands out among the greenery and is a pollinator favorite. You’ll find it scattered along trails, adding a pop of color to your hike.
4. Subalpine Fir & Englemann Spruce
Towering evergreens dominate the landscape, filling the air with the fresh scent of pine. These trees are crucial to the ecosystem, providing shelter for wildlife and helping to regulate the climate.
Respecting the Land: Leave No Trace
When exploring these stunning landscapes, it’s essential to follow Leave No Trace principles:
✔ Stay on designated trails to protect fragile plant life.
✔ Observe wildlife from a safe distance—never feed or approach animals.
✔ Pack out what you pack in to keep the wilderness pristine for future generations.
