Spring 2025 Biking Update for Going-to-the-Sun Road

If you're thinking about biking Going-to-the-Sun Road this spring, now is the time to go! The past two weeks have brought mostly gorgeous weather to Glacier National Park, making it a perfect window for cyclists.

The sun has been shining most days, temperatures have been comfortable, and the smiles from bikers are contagious. Whether you’re a local or visiting Montana for the first time, this is one of the best times of year to experience the magic of Going-to-the-Sun Road without vehicle traffic.

Current Biking Conditions

Right now, you can bike from Lake McDonald Lodge to The Loop. That’s a 28-mile round-trip ride through some of the most scenic sections of the park. McDonald Creek is roaring from the spring runoff, the towering peaks are still capped with snow, and the wildflowers are starting to bloom down low.

Most riders are completing this ride in about four hours, depending on how many scenic stops and snack breaks you take. Trust us—you'll want to stop often because the views are breathtaking.

The road is still closed to vehicles past Lake McDonald Lodge, meaning you get the unique opportunity to enjoy Going-to-the-Sun Road with minimal traffic—just fellow bikers, hikers, and the sounds of spring in the mountains.

Important Tips for Biking Going-to-the-Sun Road Right Now

  • Bring Layers: It can still get cold, especially in the morning or when you’re biking along shaded stretches like McDonald Creek. A jacket and gloves are highly recommended!

  • Pack food and water: There are no services open along the road yet.

  • Allow time for stops: The waterfalls, creeks, and snowy mountain views are too good to pass by without a photo (or five).

  • Check daily updates: Park crews are still plowing higher elevations toward Logan Pass, and conditions can change quickly.
