Spring on Going-to-the-Sun Road: Biking, Skiing & Scouting Before the Season Begins

Before the summer season kicks off in full swing, we took a day with our crew to enjoy Going-to-the-Sun Road in its peaceful, pre-season glory. On Monday, April 14th, we biked from Lake McDonald Lodge all the way to The Loop—and brought our skis along for a little spring touring adventure.

Biking Up the Road

If you’ve never biked this iconic road before the cars roll in, now’s the time. The valley was quiet and chilly—don’t forget your layers and gloves, especially as you ride alongside the cold-flowing McDonald Creek. There's not much snow down low, but once you start gaining elevation, it quickly becomes a winter wonderland.

Spring Snow & Ski Mission

The upper elevations were plastered with snow—classic Glacier spring. From The Loop, we skinned up to Granite Park Chalet, then continued to Swiftcurrent Pass with hopes of skiing Swiftcurrent Mountain. The mountain itself was a bit wind-scoured, so instead we dropped back down from the pass. Still, it was a gorgeous day with incredible views of Many Glacier, Heavens Peak, and the Garden Wall.

A True Glacier Experience

Now is an amazing time to experience Going-to-the-Sun Road without the crowds. The mix of rushing creeks, snowy peaks, and wildlife waking up for the season makes it a truly unforgettable time to explore.
